As a certain Basil Fawlty said - "Don't mention the war".

What has a German roofing contractor, an Aldi supermarket and J W Lewis have in common?

You will have to wait and see.

Massive supply contract soon to be announced.

Convoy.

Yet more congratulations!!  Our resident shelf surveyor, Steve Purcell-Herbert, has now a HGV license.

Despite attempted poaching from a local box factory, Steve has committed his long term future to us and will not only organise, but also undertake deliveries along with Tony and John Lewis.  Steve is currently un-able to use our crane off-load facilities, so additional training is now being carried out which will enable him to add this to his ever growing list of duties.

Despite the additional pressure, Steve respectfully joked that it is still easier and better than driving a tank in Iraq.

Bearing this statement in mind Steve, try to avoid Penwithick.  It may be closer to home than you think!!

Crew + 1

Firstly, congratulations to both Mark Rundle and Mark Reski who has now received certification that they have attended the lead welding course held in April.  Both have been trained to carry out basic lead welding and bossing.

With the assistance of both Andrew Barrott and Richard Bristow, both Mark's will soon gain more on-site experience, thus gaining more confidence with regards their new specialist skill.   In fact every day since his return from training, Mark Rundle has been carrying out leadwork for both Sean Sullivan and Simon Hawke.  He is then moving onto GRP parapet flashings with Andrew Bragg next week.  Mark Reski however has on-going slating duties to continue with, although his lead welding skills will be required soon (in other words Reski – hurry up!!).

Secondly, but without question the best part of this news posting, we congratulate Mark Rundle and his partner on the birth of their first child, Kieran.  Everyone at JWL is delighted with the news.

Crew and nappies – never thought we would see the day!!

Cheerio Les.

After 2 years of dedicated service, we lose a much valued employee today.

Peter Dawson moved to Cornwall in 2004 and has been employed by us throughout the time he has lived in St Austell.  However, Peter has decided to up-root once more and move to Swindon.

Having always been a bubbly and up-beat character, Peter will be missed by all at JWL.  We wish him and his family all the very best for the future.

Its time to buy shares in KFC!!

Following on from a very successful Phase One re-roofing project at Reen Manor Farmhouse (see photo's), our very own football manager moves into Newquay for his latest challenge.

Andrew Bragg has today commenced works on a development by David McLean Homes at Pentire, Newquay.

Whilst estimating this project, Spud commented that this would be an ideal job for Bragg.  "He would be close to the beaches of Newquay which includes the additional attractions that he always enjoys and he would also have unlimited access to a vast number of fast food chains".  Initially Graham was somewhat reluctant to agree, but nevertheless Bragg insisted that only home made sandwiches would be consumed.  Despite this assurance we still fear for the chicken population!

As works progress, we will post them in the photo section of our website.

Further details with regards to David McLean Homes can be obtained by going to our link section.

Things are looking good at JWL, but what about over the "Horizon"?

We are pleased to announce that J W Lewis have been awarded the second phase of a development by one of the county's finest housing developers.

Redruth based St Piran Homes, who are part of the Rowe Group, awarded us with the contract to carry out both roofing and leadwork on their development at Laity Fields, Camborne.  With works due to start next week, we look forward to developing a successful working relationship between our respective Companies for the foreseeable future.

Graham Barker has expressed his delight in being awarded this contract and with other developments in the pipeline, he hopes this will be the first of many contracts for St Piran Homes.

Look out Exeter - The Cornish Chuckle Brothers are in Town!!

We lose two of our employees this week as they leave their Cornish roots to renegade to Devon.

Mark Reski & Mark Rundle will be undertaking a Lead Welding course this week for three days and for a further two days next week.

More details as to what they actually do and achieve in this course will follow in the next few days.  Other activities will remain confidential, for a day or two at least!!

Young Un' /  Old Un'

We congratulate two of our employees for passing their CITB Health & Safety touch screen test yesterday.  This test success fulfils the criteria they both needed to enable them to obtain their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards.

Alistair (Aliey) Hore has achieved his CSCS card for Roof Slating and Tiling through the NVQ route  having gained his NVQ2 qualification under the tutorage of both Stuart Clarke and Sean Sullivan.  Since Stuart returned to J W Lewis in 2001, he has had Aliey "under his wing" and has strongly assisted his development over these past few years.  Sean is the Companies Training Manager and Internal Accessor.  With his ever improving training methods, Aliey breezed through the necessary paperwork and practical assignments.

Richard joined our Company in 2004 and has proved to be a significant "signing" for the Company.  When not renovating his house (and falling out with his neighbours), Richard undertakes specialist leadwork along with our other lead technician, Andrew Barrott.  Richard has gained his CSCS card through the "old man route" (He's over 55 - don't tell anyone!!), but it is without question that his ability and vast experience deserves the recognition that this card gives him.

Congratulations to you both

Richard has quoted the following: "Passing this test means a lot to me as both I and the Company benefit.  However, to be fair anyone who fails this test is either unlucky with the questions asked or just plain thick."

He doesn't speak very highly of you then Spud (or were you just "unlucky"?)!!

No Wonder RAF St Mawgan is Closing Down!!

We wish to welcome a new member to the management team at J W Lewis in Steve Purcell-Herbert.

Steve has come back to civilian life to re-join his former comrade Spud.  Steve resigned his commission as Sergeant with the RAF after an impressive 24 years, the last 5 at RAF St Mawgan.  He has left wth fond memories of running around muddy fields, packing parachutes and leaving early.  How life has changed!

Steve brings to the Company an unimaginable wealth of experience.  In a short space of time, he has dramatically improved the stock control and delivery service of the Company and we now have more shelves and storage containers than B&Q.

We wish Steve a long and enjoyable stay with the Company.
