IoR

The Institute of Roofing was established to represent the professional interests of individuals involved in the roofing industry and currently has some 1100 members.

The main principle of the Institute is to raise skills and standards in roofing throughout the UK which it achieves in many ways, including running and supervising professional examinations for Licentiate and Associate grades and assessing Fellowship theses.

Background
The Institute of Roofing was formed in 1980 through the collaboration of the industry’s major trade associations, with founder members drawn from the senior management of Britain’s most progressive roofing companies. A fully independent professional body, limited by guarantee, with its own constitution and board of governors, the Institute is almost entirely funded by members’ subscriptions and is a non-profit making organisation.

Who it is for
The Institute is the only professional body in the UK to represent individuals and their interests within the whole of the specialist building trades sector. Although membership is primarily geared to those involved in roofing contracting, manufacture, stocking or design anyone who is involved with this area of the construction industry is eligible so long as they meet the same strict entrance criteria.

The IoR’s activities
The Institute prepares and supervises its own professional examinations for its members and is heavily involved with all aspects of training on a nationwide basis. It has been instrumental in developing S/NVQs at levels 3 and 4 for roofing estimators, surveyors, buyers, planners and supervisors, and at level 4 for managers. The Institute’s principal aim is to continue to increase the skills of members and non-members alike.

Location
A board of twelve governors oversees the activities of the Institute which is run day-to-day by a secretariat based in London. The Institute operates through seven regions throughout the UK which act as the main point of contact for members. Involvement in regional meetings and activities is encouraged not only for their professional development potential but also as they are an ideal opportunity to network.

J W Lewis & Sons Ltd have currently four who are members of the Institute of Roofing.

Directors, John Lewis and Tony Lewis are Fellows.

Graham Barker is a Member.

Spud Yeomans is an Licentiate.
